The Panerai Luminor Marina Militare PAM05218 is a faithful re-edition of the Luminor Marina Militare ref. 5218-202/A, a watch originally designed for the Italian Navy and officially launched in 1993, following the civilian debut of the Luminor ref. 5218-201/A and the Mare Nostrum chronograph ref. 5218-301/A. This is the first time Panerai has reinterpreted the original watch in its original configuration, remaining faithful to its iconic design while cleverly optimizing its construction. The case diameter remains at 44mm, echoing the innovation of the original ref. 5218-202/A: a break from the conventional 47mm case diameter offered to the Italian Navy at the time. This evolution embodies Panerai's mission: to retain the essence of large-diameter watches while incorporating a minimalist, modern aesthetic into a clean, linear design. This bold design set a new benchmark in watchmaking, reaffirming Panerai's position as a leader and trendsetter.
The 44mm stainless steel case of the PAM05218 features a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating, achieving the same color as the PVD-coated original ref. 5218-202/A. The resulting case boasts a striking all-black appearance, preserving the distinctive aesthetic that distinguished the original watch from its steel predecessor in 1993. DLC, a carbon-based coating applied to metal surfaces, imparts high hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, while also giving the case its distinctive black appearance.
The dial bears the inscription "Marina Militare," a tribute to Panerai's century-long connection with Marina Militare, dating back to the 1910s. Furthermore, the numerals and letters on the dial have been specially redrawn to faithfully reflect the original 1993 style. Unlike Panerai's signature sandwich dial, this new model features a single-layer, openwork dial: engraved and filled with Super-LumiNova®, its slightly concave surface giving the numerals a three-dimensional effect. The new watch meticulously recreates the signature visual feature of the 1993 model: the "achromatic" dial and hands. A chemical reaction between tritium and varnish resulted in the numerals on the dial of the early production model appearing orange-brown, while the hands remained green. This contrast has since become a highly coveted element among collectors.
The watch is equipped with the P.6000 manual-winding movement, offering a three-day power reserve. Measuring just 15 lignes in diameter, it houses a balance wheel that oscillates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, enhanced by a transverse balance bridge for increased stability and precision.
